Coming Soon—A National Dialogue on Mental Health
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, led by SAMHSA, is working on a new national dialogue on mental health proposed by the White House. The U.S. Department of Education is also assisting in the effort. Saying that it is time to end the "sense of shame and secrecy associated with mental illness," President Barack Obama described the upcoming effort at a January 16, 2013, press conference as a "national conversation to increase understanding about mental health."
The national dialogue on mental health will encourage Americans to discuss mental health, break down misperceptions, and promote recovery and healthy communities. Participants will be urged to find innovative solutions to mental health needs relevant to their communities and to young people in particular. They will also be asked to develop clear action steps at the community level to proceed in a way that complements existing local activities.
