Personal Story of Recovery

Jason Zimmerman

Abstract

My name is Jason Abijah Zimmerman, but most folks just call me “Jay.” I am a certified peer support counselor/technician for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), located in Mountain Home, Tenn. I was born and raised in this area of Appalachia. After finishing college and losing my grandmother, I first began to feel depressed at the age of 21. I decided that the best way to handle these feelings and emotions was to run from them and hide them as best I could. So it was at that time I found myself enlisting in the U.S. Army.
