Figure 8.2 is titled "Substance Use among Adults Aged 18 or Older, by Serious Psychological Distress in the Past Year: 2004." It is a bar graph, where types of substance use are shown on the horizontal axis, and the percentage using substances is shown on the vertical axis. There are four categories of substance use and, for each of these categories, there is a bar representing those who had past year serious psychological distress, and a bar representing those who did not have past year serious psychological distress.

The percentage of adults aged 18 or older with past year illicit drug use was 27.6 percent among persons with serious psychological distress (SPD) in the past year and 11.8 percent among persons without SPD in the past year.
The percentage of adults with past month cigarette use was 40.8 percent among persons with SPD in the past year and 24.5 percent among persons without SPD in the past year.
The percentage of adults with past month alcohol use was 52.1 percent among persons with SPD in the past year and 53.3 percent among persons without SPD in the past year.
The percentage of adults with past month heavy alcohol use was 9.7 percent among persons with SPD in the past year and 7.0 percent among adults without SPD in the past year.
