Figure 7.3 is titled "Illicit Drug or Alcohol Dependence or Abuse, by Age Group and Substance: 2002 through 2004." It is a bar graph, where age groups in years by study year are shown on the horizontal axis, and the percentage dependent on or abusing substances in the past year is shown on the vertical axis. Tests of statistical significance at the .05 level were performed between 2003 and 2004 estimates and between 2002 and 2004 estimates; significant results are indicated where appropriate. Each bar is separated into three sections of substance use type: both alcohol and illicit drug, illicit drug only, and alcohol only.

In 2002, the percentage of youths aged 12 to 17 dependent on or abusing both alcohol and illicit drugs was 2.5 percent, illicit drugs only was 3.1 percent, and alcohol only was 3.4 percent, for a total of 8.9 percent with substance dependence or abuse.

In 2002, the percentage of young adults aged 18 to 25 dependent on or abusing both alcohol and illicit drugs was 4.2 percent, illicit drugs only was 4.0 percent, and alcohol only was 13.5 percent, for a total of 21.7 percent with substance dependence or abuse.
In 2003, the percentage of young adults aged 18 to 25 dependent on or abusing both alcohol and illicit drugs was 4.0 percent, illicit drugs only was 3.8 percent, and alcohol only was 13.2 percent, for a total of 21.0 percent with substance dependence or abuse.
In 2004, the percentage of young adults aged 18 to 25 dependent on or abusing both alcohol and illicit drugs was 4.5 percent, illicit drugs only was 3.8 percent, and alcohol only was 12.9 percent, for a total of 21.2 percent with substance dependence or abuse.

In 2002, the percentage of adults 26 years old or older who were dependent on or abusing both alcohol and illicit drugs was 0.7 percent, illicit drugs only was 1.1 percent, and alcohol only was 5.5 percent, for a total of 7.3 percent with substance dependence or abuse.
In 2003, the percentage of adults 26 years old or older who were dependent on or abusing both alcohol and illicit drugs was 0.7 percent, illicit drugs only was 1.0 percent, and alcohol only was 5.3 percent, for a total of 7.0 percent with substance dependence or abuse.
