Figure 5.3 is a line graph showing the trend in lifetime daily cigarette use among male and female young adults aged 18 to 25 from 1965 to 2002. From 1971 to 1987, the rate of lifetime daily cigarette use decreased among male young adults; it increased slightly among female young adults until 1982 then dropped to 32.9 percent in 1987, similar to the rate for men. From 1987 to 2001, rates increased somewhat for both men and women, but between 2001 and 2002 the rates dropped slightly to 38.1 percent for men and 36.1 percent for women.
