Alcohol Use, by Age Group, Race/Ethnicity, and Gender (Tables 7.5)

Table 7.5 allows a further elaboration of gender and racial/ethnic differences in alcohol use. Among the two oldest age groups, prevalence levels of lifetime, past year, and past month alcohol use were higher for males than for females within every racial/ethnic group. In general, use also was higher among males than females in the other age groups. Overall, white males reported significantly higher rates of lifetime, past year, and past month alcohol use than black and Hispanic males.

For the total sample and for the three oldest age groups, white females reported higher levels of lifetime, past year, and past month alcohol use than black and Hispanic females. Additionally, past year use among 26 to 34 year olds was significantly higher among black females than among Hispanic females.
